Vaccinations are Key to Prevent Disease

At El Camino Veterinary Hospital, we understand that basic vaccines protect most pets from common diseases. We consider your pet's lifestyle and exposure to other animals, then tailor a vaccine program to his or her particular needs. If you board your pet, an up-to-date vaccination history is important.

For your convenience, El Camino offers a walk-in vaccination clinic every Thursday afternoon from 2:00 until 7:00 pm. No appointment is needed! We recommend that you bring a record of your pet's immunizations. Because this is a clinic only for vaccinations, we offer you $2.00 off each vaccine your pet is given.

Heartworm Prevention

A dog or cat can get heartworm disease from a mosquito bite. Mosquitoes carrying the heartworm larvae can transmit them to your pet. The larvae enter the bite wound and move through your pet's body. The adult worms live in the heart, lungs, and nearby blood vessels, where they can grow up to 12 inches long.

Because the early stages of heartworm may show no symptoms, El Camino Veterinary Hospital we will make sure that he or she is tested at every yearly exam. We will prescribe the right preventive medication, such as Heartgard® for your pet and will show you how to give it.

Parasite Prevention

Parasites can sap your pet's strength and make him uncomfortable. We test fecal samples to check for internal parasites like worms. Deworming treatments make sure none of these pests are present. Regular testing and treatment are crucial for prevention.

External parasites include fleas, mites and ticks that can carry disease. Because we will be examining your pet from an early age, we will prescribe preventive medications that will make sure neither you nor your pet will be bothered by these insects. As with any medication, we will show you the right way to administer flea and tick preventives.
